Spring 2007 heralds bumper harvest for Geology Trust! March is always a time for reflection as another year comes to an end. It is difficult to imagine so much has happened in just a year! Our aim as always, has been to PROTECT the geodiversity of our area and to SHARE our Earth heritage with as wide an audience as possible. We have been doing both in equal measures. We have become non-statutory consultee with the planning authorities in our area. We have designated sites across our area for special attention. Active geoconservation had unfortunately to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We have been the lead partners on the drafting of the Local Geodiveristy Action Plan for our region.

We participated in the 14th Extraction Industry Conference in Edinburgh in June and were able to raise the profile of geoconservation with industry. We had a manned stand at the Plesiosaur exhibition last July in Scarborough and in August we had a marquee at Rosedale Show. It proved a huge success with its fossil displays and free walks despite a pretty wet end to the weekend. |

We also had a very active school programme with visits by our geologist-teacher with presentations about the local geology and two practical activities on the life of a geologist and dinosaurs, always a clear winner! We have also undertaken private commissions for schools outside North Yorkshire, youth groups and individuals who wanted our undivided attention. |

Last but not least, we have designed four more trails in our Secrets in the Landscape series. From April, you will be able to enjoy trail guides in Scarborough, Kirkbymoorside, Goathland and Grosmont. These last two have been produced with the support of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. All this work we have undertaken has been possible because of the support of our members, volunteers and organisations such as Natural England through Defra’s Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (Geodiversity Audit) and the Natural England local team which has supported us through the Earth Heritage For All project for the last three years.. |
